From Doubt to Domination: Build a Negotiatorā€™s Mindset

The Value Negotiator

Your Mindset Matters

Negotiation isn’t just about the words you say or the tactics you use. It's deeply rooted in the mindset you bring to the table. A positive, assertive mindset can be the difference between a mediocre and a spectacularly successful negotiation.

Yet, negotiating for what we want often triggers anxiety and self-doubt. This is natural, but it’s crucial to recognise that these feelings can be managed and transformed. The first step is acknowledging your internal doubts and understanding that confidence isn’t inherent—it’s built.

Identify the Source of your Self-Doubt

Self-doubt often stems from our past experiences, fear of the unknown, or even a natural tendency to focus on potential risks over rewards. It's that inner voice that questions our capabilities and makes us hesitate, especially when faced with important decisions or negotiations.

But where does your self-doubt come from? Identifying this is your first step toward overcoming it.

Embrace the Power of Mindset Shifts

Once you've identified and acknowledged the source your self doubt you can begin the journey to transform it. Your past will only dictate your future if you're not intentional about the future you want to create.

Changing the way we think can have a profound impact on our confidence levels. Positive affirmations, for instance, aren't just feel-good phrases; they are statements used to reprogram our thought patterns to focus on our strengths instead of weaknesses.

Cognitive reframing also plays a crucial role here. It involves changing negative thought patterns about ourselves and our abilities into positive, empowering beliefs. This doesn't happen overnight, but with consistent practice, the results can be life-changing.

Where to start: Actionable Steps for Confidence

1. Daily Affirmations: Start your day by affirming your strengths. Something as simple as, "I bring unique perspectives and solutions that add significant value" or "I trust my intuition and judgment in making sound decisions," can set a positive tone.

  • Reflect - Which affirmations deeply resonate with you, and how can they address areas where you feel self-doubt?

2. Small Wins: Set achievable daily goals and habits that lead to small wins. Each success builds your confidence. Even a small goal to spend 5 minutes at the end of each day to reflect on what went well and what could be improved is a powerful and intentional behaviour shift.

  • Reflect - What small, attainable goal can you set today to begin transforming self-doubt into achievement?

3. Prepare Thoroughly: In the context of negotiations, nothing builds confidence like being well-prepared. Research the other party, anticipate their questions and plan your responses. Most people won't do this, so if you build your confidence through building capability you'll be significantly further ahead!

  • Reflect - Think of a past scenario where preparation improved your confidence. How can you apply similar preparation to your upcoming negotiations or tasks?

Practice makes progress
